Tapegerm began as a project on GAJOOB’s Homemade Music website. I reached out to several artists whose tapes I’d reviewed and thought might be interesting for people to work with loops culled from them. Artists like Linda Smith, Chris Phinney, J Mundock, Baneemy and others. A dozen or so people participated in the forum and contributed new music based on this material.
As the project evolved on the forum, several of us decided it would be cool if we continued the project by sharing our own looped material. I had been working on a website called Tapegerm which was initially intended to be a place where I offered loops from cassettes as a way to see the sounds from work decades old come alive with new creations. I offered the domain to the group and over the next decade we created large archive of sounds and tracks using the sounds.
The website is still running, but functions mostly as an archive of past work. Occasionally I and maybe someone else will make something new. Much of the sounds and music have been secured for future access on the Internet Archive and I’m developing web apps on GAJOOB.ORG to keep it alive with new projects and activity.
The essential idea around Tapegerm is that sounds can evolve over time, alive with new creations. An album of material based on a small pack of material has a certain soul that breathes with the spirit of past work.
