Inside FBi Radio: Championing Sydney’s Independent Music and Culture

In the heart of Sydney, Australia, beats the pulse of a station that has long been the lifeblood of the city’s independent music and arts scene: FBi Radio. Since 2003, FBi Radio has been doing what few stations dare — handing over the airwaves to local artists, underground sounds, and passionate voices that refuse to follow the mainstream script.

What is FBi Radio?

FBi Radio is an independent, not-for-profit broadcaster dedicated to championing the music, arts, and culture of Sydney. With a mission to play 50% Australian music, and half of that from Sydney, the station creates a platform where local bands, producers, DJs, poets, and artists can find a home — and where listeners can discover something real.

This is a station made by and for its community, powered by a massive team of volunteers alongside a small staff. From breakfast shows to late-night experimental soundscapes, FBi’s programming spans hip-hop, electronica, punk, pop, indie, jazz, First Nations voices, and everything in between.

Why It Matters

FBi offers free broadcast training to help emerging presenters, celebrate marginalized voices, and work hard to reflect the diversity of the city they represent. Many of today’s internationally known Australian artists got their first spins or interviews on FBi.

Importantly, FBi operates as a non-commercial station — they survive on listener donations, grants, sponsorships, and good old-fashioned community hustle. It’s indie radio in the truest sense.

Beyond the Airwaves

FBi’s work extends far beyond the studio. They host live music events, art shows, fundraisers, and workshops, serving as a connector between creators and audiences. Their website and podcast network further amplify the sounds and stories of the scene.

A Global Inspiration

For GAJOOB readers, FBi Radio is a reminder of the power of grassroots media: when you center creativity and community, you build something that lasts. Even across oceans, their model resonates with anyone who believes music should stay independent, adventurous, and accessible.
