Creating Freely. Sharing Boldly.
FREEARTISTS.ORG Manifesto
We are not data.
We are not a resource to be mined.
We are creators, workers, thinkers—contributors to the vast, living system of public knowledge.
Artificial intelligence is trained on everything.
Everything.
All information—whether copyrighted, licensed, or unmarked—is fuel for the machine. If it’s online, if it’s spoken, recorded, published, or digitized, it becomes part of the raw material. This is the nature of AI. This is how it learns.
We declare: All accessible information is public information.
And the public has sovereign rights over it.
This is not about copyright.
This is not about individual consent.
This is about the fundamental reality that AI systems are trained on everything humanity has produced, and the benefits of that training are being captured by the few—while the cost is borne by the many.
Let AI training remain free—because it must.
But let the gains be taxed—because they belong to all of us.
We call on governments to impose substantial public-interest taxes on all AI training and commercial deployment. These funds must be directed toward the social transformations AI is forcing upon us: changes in labor, education, environment, governance, and culture. The tools trained on our collective lives must serve us all—not just shareholders and platforms.
This is not about compensating artists for use of their works.
This is about compensating the public for the use of public information.
And all information is public when it trains machines.
We are not standing against AI.
We are standing for a future where it serves the people it learns from.
We are Free Artists.
We are Free People.
We will not be extracted from without return.
