The Rising Popularity of Multi-Platform Apps

A recent study by Texas McCombs has revealed significant benefits for software companies developing apps for multiple platforms, a practice known as multihoming. Despite the upfront challenges and costs, multihoming can enhance the performance, user engagement, and product quality on the original platform. For example, games like Candy Crush Saga have achieved massive popularity by being available on various platforms such as Android, iOS, and Windows.

The research demonstrates that developers who adapt their software to different platforms gain valuable insights that lead to improvements in the original product. This effect is particularly pronounced for more complex products. On average, monthly usage on the original platform increased by 2.8% after multihoming, with further significant growth over six months.

These findings highlight that the initial difficulties of multihoming are outweighed by the long-term benefits, encouraging more developers to consider this approach.
